Level 2: Connect

As we come to the end of another fantastic term, we would like to congratulate all of our Year 2 students on their hard work, resilience and enthusiasm for learning. It has been wonderful to see the growth each student has made, both academically and socially. We are incredibly proud of the kindness, perseverance and positive attitudes they bring to the classroom each day.

Thank you to our families for your ongoing support throughout the term. We hope everyone has a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back next term for another exciting semester of learning.

Over the holidays, students are invited to complete the optional holiday activities that have been sent home. These activities provide a fun opportunity to practise the skills and concepts we have been learning in class while helping students maintain their confidence over the break. Most importantly, we encourage students to enjoy the holidays, spend time with family and friends, and read a book every day.

English

Core Literacy

To conclude Core Literacy this term, students learnt the ui spelling pattern (as in fruit and build) and the wr spelling pattern (as in wrong and wrist). They practised reading and spelling words containing these patterns, building confidence and accuracy in both reading and writing.

Students also revised prefixes, suffixes and base words, helping them understand how words are formed and how their meanings can change. In addition, they strengthened their vocabulary by identifying synonyms and antonyms, practised breaking words into syllables, and continued revising tricky words to build fluency, spelling accuracy and reading confidence.

Over the holidays, we encourage students to continue reading each day and practise recognising these spelling patterns and tricky words to maintain their confidence and fluency.

Reading & Writing

We have concluded our Term in Literacy by sharing some wonderful picture story books that celebrate NAIDOC Week. We have used the books to demonstrate how in Indigenous culture the sharing of stories is very important and is passed down from generation to generation. We also completed our final writing piece, a procedural text titled 'How to have the best school holidays ever!'

We are very proud of all the effort the Year 2 students have put into their reading and writing this Term. We encourage them to keep practicing their reading at home over the holidays. The Year 2 teachers would love to hear about or even see some of the books they are loving reading when we return to school in Term 3!

Maths

This term in Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of addition and subtraction by learning a range of mental maths and written strategies to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems confidently.

Students also completed their unit on fractions, exploring how fractions are used in real-world situations such as cooking, measurement, distance, time and seasons. They consolidated their understanding by applying fraction concepts across a variety of meaningful contexts.

In addition, students were introduced to telling time using the terms quarter past, half past and quarter to, as well as understanding the difference between clockwise and anticlockwise.

Next term, our focus will shift to multiplication and division as students continue to build their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills.

Over the holiday break, we strongly encourage students to continue practising the addition and subtraction strategies they have learned this term. Regular practice will help build confidence, accuracy and fluency, setting them up for success next term.

Inquiry

Our Year 2 students have thoroughly enjoyed their Geography unit exploring our amazing country and discovering why Australia is such a diverse and multicultural nation. Students enthusiastically investigated the many cultures, histories and stories that have shaped modern Australia and reflected on what makes our country such a special place to call home. It has been wonderful to see students' curiosity, respect and pride grow throughout this unit.

Next term, Year 2 students will begin an exciting History unit exploring how Australia became a nation and how our democracy works today. Students will investigate significant events and people involved in Federation, learn about the Australian Constitution, and discover how decisions are made in Australia. Through exploring historical sources and asking questions about the past, students will develop an understanding of how Australia's history continues to shape our country today.

Wellbeing

Next term, students will be participating in the mandatory Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) unit. Throughout this unit, students will explore topics including gender norms and stereotypes (Topic 7), respectful and positive relationships (Topic 8), inclusion, and treating others with kindness and respect.
