Fun Learning Ideas for the Holidays

Please see the ideas below that include a number of fun ways to keep the learning going over the holidays.

Maths Ideas:

Car rides - each choose a car colour and keep a tally of how many there are. The winner is the person who saw the most of their colour.

Make a prediction about how many 'white/blue/red' cars you might see in a trip and keep a tally - the winner is the person who had the closest guess.

Choose odd/even and the person who sees the most number of odd/even number plate numbers is the winner.

Round the numbers on a number plate to the nearest 10/100 - give each person a time limit.

Add/subtract 10 from the 3 digit number on the number plate or multiply and divide 10/100 to the 3 digit number.

English Ideas:

Holiday Reading Bingo - Create a bingo board with reading challenges such as: read outside, read in pyjamas, read to a pet, read a recipe, read a comic, read with a torch, or read to someone younger.

Write a Postcard or Letter - Encourage children to write a postcard, letter or email to a friend, grandparent or family member about something they have done during the holidays.

Recipe Reading and Cooking - Choose a simple recipe to make together. Children can read the ingredients, follow the steps, write a shopping list, or create their own version of the recipe.

Word Hunt - Look for interesting words while out and about — on signs, menus, maps, brochures, shops or packaging. Children can collect new words and use them in a sentence.

Story telling Walk - Go for a walk and invent a story together using things you see along the way.

Shopping List Challenge - Ask children to help write the shopping list, read labels at the supermarket, or sort items into categories such as fruit, dairy, snacks or cleaning products.

Audiobooks and Read-Alouds - Listen to an audiobook in the car or at home. Pause to predict, ask questions, or talk about new words.
