There will not be any further homework until the commencement of Term 3. However, please encourage your child to read every day, as well as access the online learning such as Mathletics and Wushka. Please encourage your child to continue to practise their Times Tables especially the 3 x tables and 4 x tables.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC week for 2026 falls during the school holidays on Sunday 5th July - Sunday 12th July. NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week, the whole school has been recognising NAIDOC week by focusing all learning on Indigenous artist Emily Kam Kngwarray's painting 'Ankerr' (Emu). Throughout the week, students have participated in a range of learning activities inspired by the painting, including making their own artwork, reading and creating dreamtime stories about Emus and animals, mapping areas in the Northern Territory, understanding where Emily was from, and reading comprehension based on Emily's life and work.

Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We have been learning about the Latin word 'tract' which means pull.  We then explored how this word forms other words by adding prefixes and suffixes. For example, con + tract = contract and pro + tract + ing = protracting and at + tract = attract and at + tract + ion = attraction. There are many other words which we formed using 'zo' as the base word and adding various prefixes and suffixes.

We are also continuing to learn about Homophones which are words that sound the same but have different spelling and different meanings. We have been working on homophones reading comprehension, finding homophones in our sustained reading books and writing passages using homophones in the correct context.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have been learning to partition shapes and lines and describe these parts using halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and tenths. The Level 3 teachers have noticed that students need ongoing practise using rulers and being able to draw lines into equal parts. Using a ruler is a skill that you can continue to work on at home and over the holidays, to grow your child's confidence!

Inquiry

Grade 3 students have been continuing their learning about Sustainability as part of their Inquiry studies. We have been creating our posters about sustainable practices and goals that we can implement at school and at home. The students have done a fantastic job of reflecting on their current practices and thinking about what they could improve or change to become more sustainable and help our environment. Each student has created a poster listing at least 5 ways they can be more sustainable, and the posters are looking fantastic with lots of colours and pictures! Be sure to ask your child about their sustainability goals and see if you can implement any of these changes over the holidays.

We look forward to seeing you all next term. Have a safe and enjoyable holidays!
