Year 5 Update

Welcome Back to Term 3! 

We are really excited to be back at school and ready to take on Term 3! This will be a busy term with lots of exciting things for our students to participate in and lots of opportunities. Please be aware that teachers will be re-establishing our routines with high expectations, including homework. Students are expected to complete spelling and reading each day at home. This term we have added an additional homework task, which students may complete over two weeks. These are not intended to be time intensive or demanding, but instead give students the opportunity to see what homework expectations will be like in higher year levels. 

We also welcome Ms Alexander to our Year 5 team as she takes over 5A for the remainder of the year. We are excited to have her join us! 

Current Learning 

Maths

In Maths we are working through our unit on subtraction. Students are building a bank of strategies they can use to solve subtraction problems including numbers with multiple digits. 

English

In English we have commenced our novel study of the book 1854: Do You Dare. We are reading this novel alongside our Inquiry and English units that are focusing heavily on Australian History, particularly the goldrush. Students will be using the novel study to support their understanding and build their ability to interpret and write non-fiction pieces. 

Inquiry 

In Inquiry we are looking at Australian History. Students will be learning about different parts of our history with a focus on the goldfields, linking back to our trip to Sovereign Hill last term. 

SEL 

This term in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students will be exploring two topics as part of the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships program.

Topic 7: Gender Norms and StereotypesStudents will explore:

• Examining how stereotypes can influence people's choices and opportunities

• Challenging assumptions about gender

• Appreciating diversity and individuality

• Promoting fairness and inclusion

Topic 8: Positive Gender RelationsStudents will explore:

• Developing respectful relationships

• Understanding empathy and respectful communication

• Recognising the characteristics of healthy relationships

• Responding respectfully to differing opinions and perspectives

These lessons encourage students to think critically about fairness, strengthen respectful relationships and contribute to an inclusive school culture. Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
