Victorian Mathematics Games Challenge

Our students are currently putting their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills to the test through the Victorian Mathematics Games Challenge—an engaging online competition designed to challenge and extend high-ability students in Years 5 – 10.

Working in teams of four, students are completing a series of self-paced modules, each featuring a range of games, puzzles and rich mathematical tasks. The challenges encourage students to think creatively, apply their mathematical knowledge in new ways, and work collaboratively to develop and share strategies.

The Challenge provides our students with opportunities to deepen their understanding across a variety of mathematical concepts while developing important skills in fluency, reasoning, creativity and problem-solving. It also encourages students to approach problems like mathematicians—asking questions, testing ideas and persevering with challenging tasks.

We are immensely proud of our students for embracing this opportunity and challenging themselves throughout the competition. Their participation is a wonderful way to celebrate their enthusiasm for mathematics while encouraging curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.

The Challenge has attracted more than 1,100 students in Term 2 and is proudly funded by the Victorian Department of Education through the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series.

Students are currently working through the modules, with Module 5 providing an important opportunity to demonstrate their achievement and dedication. Following its completion, selected teams will have the opportunity to progress to the face-to-face Regional Showcase in October (Term 4). Selection will be based on student achievement and evidence of dedication throughout the Challenge. 

Module 6 will also be delivered online during Term 4, providing students with another exciting opportunity to extend their mathematical thinking and finish the Challenge on a high note!
