Carnegie Primary School students have continued their exciting start to the year with a range of enriching academic opportunities.
John Monash Science School Little Scientist Program
Last term students had the exciting opportunity to participate in the John Monash Science School (JMSS) Little Scientist Program, where they stepped into the role of young scientists and researchers.
Through four-week sessions at JMSS, students explored a range of scientific concepts under the guidance of their JMSS mentors. They then had the opportunity to conduct their own research by selecting a topic in physics, biology or chemistry, developing a research question and designing experiments to investigate their ideas.
The program culminated in the annual JMSS Science Exhibition Night, where our Little Scientists joined the wider JMSS community and proudly presented their research findings. Students shared their investigations, discussed their results and answered questions about their research.
Presenting their work was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their curiosity and creativity, build confidence through public speaking and develop their communication skills. It was fantastic to see Xavier, Zach, Ethan, Matthew, Devika, Austin & Patrick confidently sharing their discoveries and engaging with the wider JMSS community.
We are incredibly proud of our Little Scientists and the enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment they demonstrated throughout the program. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience authentic scientific research and celebrate their learning with the JMSS community.
Maths Games Day: Making Maths Fun!
Our students recently had the opportunity to take part in a Maths Games Day, a fun and engaging event designed to celebrate mathematics, problem-solving and teamwork.
The Maths Games Day gave students the chance to explore mathematics in a different way. Working in teams of four, students took on a range of mathematical challenges that encouraged creativity, lateral thinking, efficiency and collaboration. The emphasis was on thinking flexibly, trying new approaches and supporting one another.
The day brought together students from a diverse range of schools, allowing participants to meet other young people who shared their enthusiasm for mathematics. Our students challenged themselves, developed their mathematical thinking skills and experienced the excitement of solving problems as part of a team.
Prizes and rewards added to the excitement of the day and provided an opportunity to celebrate students' achievements and efforts.
The Maths Games Day was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see that maths can be challenging, creative and, most importantly, fun. We hope the experience has inspired them to continue exploring mathematics with curiosity, confidence and enthusiasm.
Maths Games Days are organised and run by host schools, with support from the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV).
Hayden: “When I was at the Maths Games Day at Bentleigh West Primary School, my favourite part was when we had to make an equation to form every number to100 using only the digits 2, 0, 2, 6. I liked it because it was a lot harder and very different to normal schoolwork. We also did other things like playing maths games against other schools to earn points for our team.”
Willow: “The Maths Games Day was really fun because we got to do maths in a different way. The best part was winning the jar of lollies at the end of the day. The math quiz was my favourite activity, because it was moving so fast we had to work together to problem solve really quickly.”
