From the 5/6 Classrooms

We have been back at school for almost two weeks, and Team 5/6 students have made a positive start to our final term of learning!

We have completed our Start Up activities, revisiting our school values, learning expectations and wellbeing strategies to help us work together and make the most of the term ahead.

In English, we have begun our mentor text study of A Ghost in My Suitcase by Gabrielle Wang. To build our background knowledge, students have completed a KWL chart about China and Chinese culture, identifying what they already know, what they want to know and what they have learnt. They have also explored Gabrielle Wang’s website and family history to better understand the context behind the story. Students have begun developing their note-taking skills and used the title, front cover and blurb to make informed predictions about the text.

In Mathematics, students have begun investigating integers, including how to add and subtract negative numbers. They have also started exploring Cartesian planes, developing their understanding of these concepts through a range of activities and problem-solving tasks.

Our Integrated Curriculum unit, Australia and Our Asian Neighbours, has also begun. Students have explored the concept of place and learnt about life in different Asian countries by reading about the experiences of children from diverse backgrounds. This is helping them develop a deeper understanding of the people, places and perspectives that will inform their research and collaborative preparations for the Team 5/6 Travel Expo later this term.

We look forward to a busy and rewarding term as students continue to build their knowledge, strengthen their independence and work together towards our end-of-year celebrations!

Home Learning

A friendly reminder that each week, students are expected to complete the following:

Nightly Reading: 20 - 30 minutes each night, choosing a mix of fiction and non-fiction texts that interest them

Weekly SMART Spelling: practise their spelling words each night using a Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check process. Additional activities are also provided in students' Home Learning books to further reinforce spelling skills and word knowledge.

Mathematics Grid: complete one task from the Mathematics Grid each week. Parents sign once the task is completed.

For students who are still developing recall of multiplication facts up to 10 × 10, regular practice at home is strongly encouraged.

Optional Online Tasks: Optional My Numeracy and My Literacy tasks are available through Essential Assessment for students to explore online.

Students are to bring their Home Learning Book and School Diary to and from school each day.

Grade 5 Camp

Well done to our Grade 5 students who demonstrated excellent behaviour and a positive attitude on camp at the end of last term! It was a wonderful experience for everyone, with lots of positive risk-taking, stepping outside comfort zones, challenging themselves and, of course, having plenty of fun!
