Supporting Your Child’s Wellbeing

Children experience many different emotions and challenges as they grow, and there may be times when they need a little extra support. This might be during times of transition, such as starting school, moving between year levels or adjusting to changes at home, or when experiencing anxiety, worries, friendship difficulties, challenges with managing emotions or changes in behaviour. These experiences are a normal part of growing up, but sometimes children may need additional support to help them navigate these challenges.

A strong partnership between families and school plays an important role in supporting children’s learning, mental health and wellbeing. As parents and carers, you know your child best, while your child’s teacher has a valuable relationship with them at school and can provide insight into how they are feeling, learning and interacting with others. Sharing concerns and keeping communication open helps us work together to better understand your child’s needs and provide consistent support across home and school.

Start by talking with your child’s classroom teacher

Your child’s classroom teacher is the best first point of contact if you have any concerns about their wellbeing. As someone who knows your child and works closely with them each day, they can help you understand what support may be helpful and work in partnership with you to support your child’s needs. They may notice changes in your child’s engagement, behaviour, or interactions at school and can share valuable insights into how your child is going in the classroom.

Just as importantly, teachers value the partnership they share with families. By keeping communication open and working together, families and teachers can build a more complete picture of a child’s needs and identify ways to support them both at home and at school.

While the school can provide support and work alongside families, there may also be times when accessing external services can provide additional guidance and specialised support.

Where can families find additional support?

  • Your Family GP: A GP can be a helpful first point of contact if you have concerns about your child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour or development. They can discuss your concerns and help you explore appropriate support options, including referrals to other professionals.
  • Psychologists and other Allied Health Professionals: Depending on your child’s needs, a psychologist, speech pathologist or occupational therapist may be able to provide specialised support.
  • Community and Family Support Services: Local community health services and family support organisations can offer advice, resources and assistance to help families navigate challenges.
  • Online resources and helplines: Free resources are available to help parents and carers better understand their child’s needs and access support when it is needed.

Working together to support our children

At BPPS, we recognise the important role that families, educators and external professionals play in supporting children’s wellbeing. We encourage families to reach out if they have questions or concerns about their child. By working together, we can identify appropriate school-based supports and help families explore additional services where needed.

Connecting with support early can help children and families feel more confident, supported and equipped to navigate challenges as they arise. Every child and family is different, and finding the right support can make a real difference. If you would like to explore the services and organisations listed or are unsure which options might best suit your family, please reach out to the school. We value our partnership with families and are always happy to work alongside you to find the support that best meets your child’s and family’s needs.

Thank you for supporting our school's commitment to student wellbeing.

Kind regards,
