Buarth Gurru - Year 8 Fellas

Big greetings to our Buarth Gurru family and friends!

Welcome back to another term with our Year 8 fellows at Buarth Gurru! This term has opened up more opportunities for the mob to get out into the wider community, try more things and keep building their confidence, independence and connections.

It’s been a great start, with the fellows returning with positive attitudes and settling back into the boarding routine well. We’ve hit the ground running, and there’s been plenty happening both in and out of the house!

Basketball, basketball and more basketball!

Our fellows are playing Under 16s basketball in the Collingwood Summer Basketball League, with training during the week and games on Saturdays. By the time Saturday afternoon rolls around, a few of our fellas are well and truly ready to relax after a busy week!

Sunshine, sand and getting out and about. Our weekend activities have given us some wonderful opportunities to enjoy the warmer weather. A big day at Black Rock was a real highlight,. We’ve also enjoyed little trips to Percy White Reserve on those hot afternoons.

Last week, we headed to the movies, and our fellows are continuing to grow in confidence as they navigate Richmond during street leave. These everyday experiences are important steps towards building independence and feeling comfortable out in the wider community.

Yarning, reflecting and finishing strong. We also shared afternoon tea with our Poorneet fellows, creating an opportunity to yarn about how to finish the year strong. Drawing on their experiences and memories from last year, the boys were able to reflect on what worked well, what they’ve learned and how they can make the most of the term ahead.

From the basketball court to the kitchen. Our Saturday night dinners have become a great way to finish off a busy week. Denzel, John and Jalen have each stepped up as student chefs, serving up everything from chicken carbonara to steak and eggs and a hearty stew.

The boys enjoy cooking food from home, sharing a meal and having a say in what goes on the table. And of course, the staff are very happy to support this particular life skill!

A big shout-out for courage and leadership.A special shout-out to Jordan, who stood alongside Maya at the Gala. Both spoke confidently and proudly, showing real courage and leadership. We’re proud of them for stepping up, sharing their voices and representing themselves so well.

All in all, it’s been a positive start to the term, with plenty of basketball, outdoor adventures, good food and opportunities for the boys to grow. We’re looking forward to keeping that momentum going and finishing the year strong.

Until next time, take care, stay connected and thanks for being part of our Buarth Gurru journey!

Big Greetings
