A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the SLC on Springvale Campus
What a memorable fortnight it has been in the SLC! Our camp at Golden Valley may have brought plenty of wet weather, but it certainly did not dampen our spirits. Students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, resilience and teamwork, creating lasting memories and strengthening friendships along the way. It was wonderful to see our learners step outside their comfort zones and demonstrate our school values in action.
In Mathematics, we are continuing our additive thinking fractions teaching and learning cycle. Students began the week by revisiting strategies for adding fractions with related denominators before extending their understanding to the subtraction of fractions. The SLC teachers are thrilled to celebrate the progress being made, with many students already achieving their learning targets. Their persistence, willingness to learn from mistakes and growing confidence in numeracy have been fantastic to witness.
In Writing, students are building on the excitement generated by the Mini Launch incursion where they learned how to develop, market and sell a product. They are working through the writing process as they design and create their own products, carefully considering their target audience and identifying what their audience might need or value. This purposeful learning experience is encouraging students to think creatively, communicate purposefully and make thoughtful decisions as writers.
In Reading, the SLC students have been building on their capacity to summarise so that they can better understand what they read. Many students are confidently identifying the main ideas and important details, while others are going above and beyond by identifying and explaining links between ideas from different parts of a text. These higher-order thinking skills are helping students become more thoughtful, reflective and analytical readers.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, growth and enthusiasm our students continue to demonstrate each day. With the end of term approaching quickly, we look forward to celebrating even more successes in the weeks ahead.
