Visual Art

What a fantastic start to the year we have had in Visual Arts! Term 1 was filled with creativity and exploration, and now Term 2 is almost complete. Students have loved coming into our beautiful art room, which is transformed each week with new displays and exciting learning experiences for their specialist Visual Arts sessions.

We are also proud to have two new Art Captains who have been doing a wonderful job announcing Visual Arts awards at assemblies and assisting with important art room responsibilities and school events.

All students have worked incredibly hard this semester, and we are so fortunate to have such talented and enthusiastic young artists at our school. Keep up the fabulous creative work, everyone!

What's Been Happening in Visual Arts?

Term 1

During Term 1, our focus areas were Drawing and Collage. All students began the year by creating self-portraits, which will become part of a special Memory Book that students receive when they graduate from Primary School. Students also celebrated Chinese New Year through an art activity learning how to draw a horse.

SLC students explored Pop Art through drawing and collage. They were introduced to artists such as Andy Warhol and experimented with techniques including distortion and exaggeration in their collage artworks. MLC students were introduced to the works of Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha, Byzantine Art, Paul Klee, and Henri Matisse. Through drawing and collage activities, students explored a range of art elements including line, shape, colour, pattern, and texture. JLC students progressed from drawing self-portraits to creating beautiful Harmony Day collages. Their colourful artworks were proudly displayed throughout the classrooms, helping to celebrate diversity and inclusion within our school community. FLC students explored a variety of drawing and collage experiences. They experimented with drawing on black paper using pastels and created delightful Easter-themed collages featuring baby chicks hatching from eggs. These artworks were enthusiastically completed and enjoyed by all students.

Term 2

This term, our focus shifted to Painting, and students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring a range of painting techniques and learning about influential artists. Many examples of their wonderful work can be seen displayed around the artroom.                                                                                              SLC students painted Sydney Harbour landscapes while learning about Ken Done. They also explored the colourful world of Yayoi Kusama and particularly enjoyed experimenting with drip painting inspired by Jackson Pollock. MLC students were introduced to the works of Salvador Dalí and Edvard Munch. Through their painting projects, they explored distortion, expression, and the concepts of foreground and background in artworks. JLC students investigated colour theory by learning about primary and secondary colours. Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's artwork Concentric Circles, they mixed colours to create vibrant and expressive paintings. FLC students participated in a variety of painting experiences throughout the term. One of their major projects was creating beautiful flowerpots for Mother's Day. They also experimented with several painting techniques, including marble painting, which quickly became a favourite activity. Examples of their colourful creations can be seen displayed on the classroom walls.

During the second half of Term 2, students began exploring the exciting world of Textiles. They have been learning a range of textile techniques, including simple sewing skills, weaving using the "under and over" technique, creating colourful pom poms, and experimenting with textile tie-dyeing. These hands-on activities have allowed students to develop fine motor skills while expressing their creativity through different materials and processes. Students are always excited about coming to the art space that we have created together this year. It has become a welcoming environment where they feel confident to experiment, create, and share their artistic ideas. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to try new techniques continue to make Visual Arts a vibrant and enjoyable learning experience for everyone.

Another important project this term involved a group of MLC students who collaborated to create a Reconciliation Week poster, which is now proudly displayed in our art room.
