Year 1/2

Literacy:
In Literacy students have been learning about recount writing, by focussing on summarising the main events in a story and using connectives in our language. The words 'and then' have been BANNED, which is encouraging students to diverse their vocabulary when writing about their weekend on a Monday morning.
Students are also working on writing 'friendly letters.' We have looked at features of letters and explored the authors tone. This week students have selected a friend or family member to write a letter to. Students are working through the writing cycle of planning, drafting, editing and publishing to produce a letter.
Sounds-write:
We are well into the swing of Sounds Write, students have been loving the new routine within our Literacy Block. While one grade is with their teacher focusing on a particular sound, the other grade is practising their letter formation and spelling. The past 2 weeks, students have been focusing on the following sound;
Grade 1 - /ee/
Grade 2 - /ue/
Next week, we begin a new unit, focusing on new sounds;
Grade 1 - /oe/
Grade 2 - /oy/
Your child has been given a Reading Satchel that is filled with a range of reading resources to help consolidate the learning that we are doing at school.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been exploring different ways they can use skip-counting in their lives. They have been counting collections of coins using efficient skip-counting strategies. This week we have started a unit on Place Value and are exploring different ways to represent two and three-digit numbers. The students have very much enjoyed playing 'Place Value Wars', where pairs flip cards to make two or three-digit numbers.
Alongside Place Value, we have started an inquiry into 2D and 3D shapes. We've been investigating where shapes can be found in everyday life and their functions, how shapes can be sorted based on their attributes, and why certain shapes might be chosen over others when it comes to design. Students have enjoyed sharing shapes that they have noticed at home.
Humanities:
In Humanities, we have been focusing on 'My Place'. Students have had wonderful discussions about their 'place' and what it means to them. This has then moved to further discussions about the town of Moriac and our school. They have created amazing illustrations of their place and their town.
Sustainability:
The school is running a new initiative called 'Sustainability Super-heroes.' This will involve 2 students from each class being selected as a hero, to help manage things in the school involving rubbish, nude food and caring for the garden. The students who are selected will also be invited to attend a tree planting day at Lake Modewarre. Students have been very excited and involved with this, some beginning before it has even started by tidying up the school!
