Year 3/4

Literacy

So far this term, students have been reading a variety of narratives and have followed the writing process of planning, drafting, editing and publishing some very entertaining narratives.  Over the next few weeks, students will focus on persuasive writing where they will create a contention and support this by using emotive language, modality words and evidence and opinions.  Students will engage with a variety of mentor text to support their learning during this unit.

Maths

In Maths students have been working through our Place Value unit learning to identify and explain odd and even numbers, rename and partition numbers, order and compare decimals and whole numbers and use estimation to check the reasonableness of answers. For the remainder of the term, students will focus on our Money unit and Data and Representation unit.

Humanities

In Humanities, we are learning about one of the world’s oldest and largest aquaculture systems—Budj Bim. We are exploring how the Gunditjmara people domesticated the landscape by building an extensive system of stone eel traps, supporting their food supply for over 6,600 years.

To deepen our understanding, we:

🎥 Are creating short films (in a BTN-style news report) to explain how the eel traps work and what they mean for the Gunditjmara people.

📖 Are writing short visual stories imagining a day in the life of a Gunditjmara person 5,000 years ago—waking in their stone hut, weaving baskets, trapping and smoking eels to share with their community.

Next, we are investigating how First Nations peoples may be the first to accomplish a major ocean crossing in human history, using advanced technology and navigation skills.
