Auslan Takes Over the Senior School!

Semester 2 is underway, and our Grade 3–6 students are excited to continue their Auslan journey!

This week, we celebrated NAIDOC Week by exploring the connections between Auslan and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and cultures. Students learnt that both are community languages unique to Australia and discovered how visual communication, movement and symbols can share meaning without spoken words.

  • Grade 3 & 4 watched the Auslan-interpreted story The Coloured Echidna before creating their own unique echidnas using Aboriginal-inspired symbols and artwork.
  • Grade 5 explored Indigenous artwork in sport and designed their own Indigenous-inspired jerseys using traditional symbols.
  • Grade 6 created ‘Boomerang Stories,’ using Aboriginal symbols to retell a Dreamtime story or create an original one, celebrating storytelling, culture and visual communication.

It has been a fantastic start to Semester 2, with students developing their Auslan skills while celebrating Australia's rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
