Reading Informative Texts
Welcome back to Term 3! We hit the ground running, opened the term by exploring the work of the master of documentaries, David Attenborough. Students were absolutely captivated by his use of music, imagery and carefully chosen language to draw viewers into his documentary Oceans. It was the perfect way to launch our unit, showing students just how engaging and powerful a high-quality non-fiction text can be.
Following this, students selected their own non-fiction books to explore during independent reading. It has been so much fun learning alongside them as they dive into topics ranging from Australian animals and world sports to tsunamis and space. Their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning something new has been wonderful to see.
In our reading lessons, we are deepening our understanding of informative texts by exploring different text types, including information reports, explanation texts and biographies. Students are learning to identify the purpose, structure and features of each text type, helping them better understand not only what they are reading, but why the author has presented the information in that way.
By analysing text features, structure and content, students are becoming more thoughtful and critical readers. It's been fantastic to hear the rich discussions taking place as students share their opinions about what makes a non-fiction text clear, engaging and effective.
We can't wait to see where our reading takes us next!
