The Feast of the Assumption: A Call to Pray Together
Celebrating Mary, Our Mother and Model of Faith
On August 15th, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This significant feast celebrates the Catholic belief that Mary was taken into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.
The Assumption reminds us of the hope at the heart of our Christian faith: God calls us to eternal life with Him. Mary’s life is a beautiful example of trusting God, responding with courage to His call and remaining faithful through both moments of joy and times of suffering.
A Call to Make Prayer Part of Family Life
Mary’s life was deeply rooted in prayer, trust and openness to God. Her example encourages us to make prayer a regular part of our own lives and, especially, our family life.
Pope Leo XIV has encouraged families to rediscover the importance of prayer and to make time to pray together. Prayer gives families an opportunity to pause from the busyness of daily life, give thanks, bring their hopes and worries before God, and grow closer to one another through faith.
This Feast of the Assumption provides a wonderful opportunity to pause, gather as a family and pray together.
A Prayer for Families to Pray Together
Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother,
you trusted God and courageously said “yes” to His call.
Help us, as a family, to follow your example
and place our trust in God each day.
Teach us to make time for prayer,
to listen to God’s voice
and to be grateful for the blessings in our lives.
When we experience difficulties,
help us to support one another with love.
When we experience joy,
help us to remember to give thanks.
Mary, guide our family closer to Jesus.
Help our home to be a place of faith,
peace, forgiveness and love.
May our family prayer strengthen our relationship with God
and inspire us to share His love with others.
Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us.
Amen.
A Family Invitation
This Feast of the Assumption, we encourage every family to make time to pray together. Whether it is a short prayer before a meal, a Hail Mary before bed, or a quiet moment of prayer as a family, these simple acts can nurture faith and strengthen the bonds within our homes.
Let us follow Mary’s example and make prayer a meaningful part of family life.
Pause. Gather. Pray.
May the Feast of the Assumption remind us that, when families make space for God, faith can grow, hope can flourish and love can become stronger.
As we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, may Mary, our Mother, gently lead each of our families closer to Jesus. May our prayers unite us, strengthen us and remind us that God is always with us.
With every prayer, may our families grow together in faith, hope and love.
Our Lady of the Assumption, pray for us.
Amen.
