August 2025

A good year - no rebuttals about it

Our inter-school debaters ended off the debating season well in the Debating Association of Victoria’s competition at Tintern Grammar on Wednesday, August 13.

Our D-grade team came out on top in their debate against Vermont Secondary College. The team of Year 9s April, Kasper and Grey successfully argued “it should be optional to complete the Census in Australia”. Kasper was announced as Best Speaker. Their coach is Mr Graham.

Our B-grade team of Year 11s Floyd, Oliver and Teiva did well in their ‘secret topic’ debate against Whitefriars College. They were well-supported in their one-hour preparation by Caitlin. Whitefriars, however, successfully argued against the proposition that “all competitive sports (e.g. the Olympics) should have age categories”.

Our C-grade team of Georgia, Bella and Ethan also debated well but were pipped at the post in arguing that the Australian government should not prioritise tourism as Australia’s main export. They were supported in their research by Jeremy and Aidan. Their coach is Ms Davidson.

Congratulations to all. Here’s hoping next year is an even better debating bonanza.
