Sophocles’ Oedipus the King

Year 12 English excursion to the live performance and workshop.

“I learnt about the different takes on characters and how the audience would’ve felt about the dramatic irony in the show. It also shows the impact of some of the lines that I didn’t know before. It was also good to get an overview of the play and furthered my understanding.”

–  Aimee Stewart

"From the ‘Oedipus the King’ live performance, I learnt how the play can be interpreted in multiple different ways depending on the audience viewing it. For example, some people believed Creon to be a soft-spoken individual, whereas others believed he was more of a confident character, but this view changed easily when visually viewing the play. Or, Tiresias was portrayed as very defiant in the live performance, whereas others view him as a mocking character when reading the play script, laughing at Oedipus rather than trying to save him. Additionally, I highly enjoyed putting visuals on my thoughts; it helped me to understand and appreciate the play better. Further, I liked the way the actors added their own creative-edge to the performance, by including scenes that weren’t necessarily written in the play, as this helped us to see different perspectives on interpretations. Ultimately, the discussion after the play helped me to realize that in the essay, there is no right or wrong answer – it is highly subjective. “ – Aya Elkhishin

Seeing the play gave me a better understanding about the play and how they showed us different ways that characters behave and act  and how the tone in which you read the play has an impact on how you can perceive the characters and can change your opinions about them.” – Maddy Sandow

“I enjoyed the performance of Oedipus the King at the Malthouse. I think the contrasting characterisations of individual characters allowed for multiple lenses to view the play. I particularly enjoyed the revised version of Tiresias, who was far more mocking in this version.” – Angus Pappas
