Exchange Program
August 2025
I was absolutely honored and ecstatic to find out that I was one of only five Australians to receive a scholarship to the Goethe Institut German Language Summer Camp program, a two-week long study camp spent in Salzburg, Austria. It offers students aged 15-17 studying German the opportunity to improve their German language skills, create friendships with others from all around world, while participating in fun activities amongst beautiful landscapes.
In March, I was required to create a 2-minute application video about why I wanted to go, and what I was hoping to get out of the camp. After having gotten past the initial round of applications, I had a 15-minute interview with Goethe Institut to further talk about myself and motivations for the camp.
Then in June, I was off! Each day consisted of German lessons, free-time, and scheduled games or team building exercises – they were always certainly entertaining and made for good laughs. On some days, we went on a day trip to a high-ropes course, lake, swimming pool, or the city of Salzburg.
Although my time there went by incredibly quickly, I left with a plethora of memories that will stay with me forever. It was truly an amazing experience to connect with so many people that I never would have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. I have certainly formed some life-long friendships. To be immersed in an entirely new environment with new people, a new language, and new challenges, taught me more about myself and the world. I strengthened my sense of self, independence and interpersonal skills. This trip only heightened my desire to travel the world and try more new things.
The teachers and counselors were exciting and committed. I also appreciated how engaging the classes were. They were interesting and practical in building our speaking, listening, and writing skills. There were a few fun workshops that helped us utilise German in different situations, for example, a trivia night. Having heard German so much, it feels much less daunting to engage in conversations.
I must say though, the cows on the property may have been my favourite part.
So, if anyone is considering studying German or applying for travel programs, I implore you to apply: studying German and participating in this fruitful program has been a major highlight for me.
