What Makes a Legacy?

As OPGA prepares to announce the 2026 Old Peninsula Hall of Fame inductees, it feels like the right time to reflect on what truly defines a legacy.

The Hall of Fame was created by OPGA to recognise alumni and past staff who have excelled at the highest levels across six categories: Community or Public Service, Sport, the Arts, the Sciences, Commerce and Industry, and Service to OPGA or the School. It honours achievement and celebrates those whose contributions have created real and lasting impact.

As nominations are considered and final decisions discussed, some common themes continue to emerge. The strongest candidates are not simply accomplished, with impressive titles or accolades; they are people of genuine character. They demonstrate persistence, integrity, generosity, and a willingness to use their talents in ways that benefit others. Some are widely recognised in their fields, while others have made quieter but equally meaningful contributions to their communities.

That is perhaps the most powerful message for our current students, the future Hall of Famers among us. Legacy is not built quickly, and it is rarely built with recognition in mind. Instead, it comes from: 

• Consistency in effort when no one is watching
• A mindset of continual learning and growth
• A willingness to contribute, not just achieve
• The courage to define success on your own terms

The Hall of Fame is, in many ways, a living history of our School, but it is also a reminder that success can take many forms, and the most enduring legacies are those that leave others better and communities stronger.
