Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families,

This week, we gathered together to celebrate Mass, reflecting on the message “You are the vine,” and how we are all connected through God’s love and care for one another. We also enjoyed our Mother’s Day/Special Persons celebration, where the children proudly shared their performances and dances. Thank you to all the families and special people who attended and helped make these celebrations so meaningful. We wish all mothers, carers, and special people a very happy Mother’s Day.

Learning for Year 4

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students reflected on the important role mothers and special people play in their lives. They expressed their appreciation by writing thoughtful messages that showed gratitude, love, and recognition for how special these people are to them.

English:

In English, students are developing their reading and writing skills through our class novel Leo and Ralph. They are practising text-level reading by responding to questions about the story and demonstrating their understanding of key events and characters. Students are also building their reading fluency, focusing on reading accurately, at an appropriate pace, and with expression. Vocabulary development is supported through learning and using words from the novel in context. In writing, students are learning about narrative structure and are beginning to plan engaging character and setting introductions, using ideas from familiar texts and incorporating descriptive language such as similes.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students are learning to identify and represent fractions of collections, including halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and tenths. They are developing their understanding of how fractions work by exploring the role of the numerator and denominator, and how these are used when drawing and shading parts of a collection. Through hands-on activities and visual representations, students are building confidence in recognising and explaining fractions in different contexts.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Learning, students are reviewing their understanding of places and connections in preparation for new learning. They are recalling key ideas about different places, identifying both natural and human features, and exploring how people are connected to places in a variety of ways. Through discussion and reflection, students are strengthening their understanding of how environments and communities are linked.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students are learning that eye contact and facial expressions are essential parts of effective communication. They are practising how to participate in greeting routines, using appropriate eye contact and expressive facial cues to support meaning. Through guided practice and interactive activities, students are developing their confidence in communicating clearly and respectfully using Auslan.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social Emotional Learning, students are developing their understanding of our school-wide expectations, with a focus on physical contact, the consequence cycle, and moving safely and respectfully around the school. They are learning to recognise what safe and unsafe physical contact looks like, how to move sensibly in different school spaces, and what happens when expectations are not followed. Through discussion and real-life examples, students are building their awareness of how their actions can support a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
