Spotlight on Learning
Damascus Community
Dear Families,
Year 2 students have had a wonderful week of learning and growth. In Writing, students explored The Fabulous Friend Machine, making predictions, expanding sentences using because, but, and so, and creating their own imaginative story ideas. It was fantastic to see students planning and writing their own narratives with increasing confidence. In Reading and Spelling, students focused on suffixes such as -er and -est, along with key spelling rules, helping to build fluency and accuracy. In Mathematics, students continued developing their understanding of place value by working with larger numbers, representing them in different ways, and comparing and ordering numbers with confidence. In Religious Education, students deepened their understanding of Mary’s role in the life of Jesus. They also built their Auslan skills and explored how to seek help from trusted adults.

Religious Education:
Students will be preparing to lead our upcoming school Mass as hosts for the community. They will practise readings, prayers and hymns, while learning about the parts of the Mass reflecting on Our Lady of Fatima and how we gather together in faith, service and celebration.

English:
Students will continue creating their own narrative stories by writing the beginning and middle of a story. They will focus on adding exciting details, using time connectives, adjectives and adverbs, and editing their writing to make it clear and interesting. In Reading, students will practise words with silent letters and build fluency, spelling and comprehension skills.
Mathematics:
Students will continue exploring place value by representing, building and comparing four-digit numbers in different ways. They will also learn to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 using number lines and place value knowledge.

Integrated Curriculum:
Students will explore why Country is deeply important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through stories and discussion, they will learn that Country includes land, waters, culture, identity and connection, and consider ways people care for Country.

Auslan:
Students will continue building their Auslan vocabulary and confidence by learning and practising signs in interactive activities and games. We will also enjoy some stories in auslan and take notice of the facial expressions adding meaning to the signs.

Social & Emotional Learning:
Students will learn about help-seeking and how to support a friend who may need assistance. They will practise identifying trusted people, using helpful words and responding kindly through role-play activities.

Read together each night and talk about the story. Ask simple questions such as: Who was in the story? What happened first? How did the character feel?
Practise maths in everyday life by noticing numbers around you. Ask your child to read house numbers, compare prices, or say the value of digits in numbers (for example, in 245, the 2 means 200).

Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.
Please remind your child to change their reading books when they need to.
Enjoy your weekend,
The Damascus Team
