YEAR 10 APPLIED 7 VET SCIENCE
Taking Science from the Classroom to the Farm!
Our Year 10 Applied & VET Science students have been exploring the fascinating link between genetics, genomics and dairy farming. To complement their classroom learning, students recently headed out on a field trip to see these concepts in action.
At a local working dairy farm, students gained an insight into the many facets of dairy production, including how genomics and genetic testing can be used to improve herd performance by selecting for traits that contribute to a productive and sustainable herd.
The day also highlighted the wide range of careers and occupations connected to agriculture, giving students a valuable opportunity to see where their science learning can lead beyond the classroom.
A huge thank you to RACE Gippsland, AgriTech Education and Innovation, Rowdy, Amy and Molly for sharing their knowledge and giving our students such a fantastic hands-on experience of a working dairy farm.
A special thank you also to Darren from ABS Global – Australia for providing students with insights into genomics, genetic selection and animal testing, and how these tools can be used to make informed decisions to improve dairy herd performance.
Students also visited the National Herd Development Co-op in Korumburra, gaining an insight into the services they provide to support dairy farmers, including herd testing, artificial breeding and technician jobs.
A fantastic day of science, agriculture, technology and real-world learning!
