Year 4

This term in Mathematics, we have been developing our multiplication skills by learning and practising a range of strategies. We have explored the Bar Method, which is particularly useful for single-digit multiplication and helps us build answers step by step; the Column Method, which provides an efficient and organised way to solve larger multiplication problems using place value; and the Grid Method, which breaks numbers into tens and ones to help us understand and solve two-digit multiplication problems. By building our mathematical toolkit and practising different strategies, we are becoming more confident mathematicians who can select the most effective strategy for the problem they are solving.
This term, we have been reading the classic Australian novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. Through the story, students have explored the unique environment of the Coorong and developed their understanding of its wildlife, landscape and importance. Using Storm Boy as a springboard, students have researched the Coorong and used their learning to write an information report, developing their skills in gathering information, organising ideas into paragraphs and writing with clear, factual language.
