Year 4 Geckoes and Koalas

Can you believe we are already in Week 4 of Year 4? What a wonderful start to the year it has been! The students have settled quickly into our class routines and expectations, and we have enjoyed getting to know one another through a range of ‘About Me’ activities, group games and teambuilding tasks. We were excited to welcome four new students, Marley, Savreen, Rylee and Josh, and we look forward to a fantastic term of learning together.

Year 4 were honoured to host the first Mass of the year for Ash Wednesday. Our readers spoke beautifully, and we took time to reflect on Jesus’ journey as we made our Lenten promises. We discussed ways we can pray more, give up or take up habits that help us live healthier lives, and participate in almsgiving. In Religion, we have explored Bible stories about Jesus’ first disciples and learned how Jesus used parables to teach people how to live good and meaningful lives.

In Mathematics, we have been diving into all things Place Value. We surprised ourselves as we confidently read numbers into the millions, and even billions and trillions, by recognising the patterns within our number system.

In English, we are enjoying our novel study of Leo and Ralph. Students have been learning new vocabulary and exploring literary devices such as ‘show, don’t tell’ and figurative language. We have also been practising using clues in the text to infer meaning, helping us grow as both readers and writers.

In HASS, we are currently studying the geography and natural features of Africa and Europe and comparing them with those of Australia. Students have enjoyed using their iPads for research and are developing their skills in Canva to present their information creatively and effectively.

Year 6 Emus and Brolgas

The Year 6 students have had a fantastic start to their final year of primary school. We have settled confidently into our new leadership roles and are already embracing the responsibility that comes with our ministries, showing pride, enthusiasm and a genuine commitment to serving our school community.

In English, we have begun exploring action narratives and the features that create tension and excitement. Through Talk for Writing, students have been experimenting with adverbial phrases and suspense‑building techniques to support them in crafting engaging narratives this term. In Mathematics, we have launched into data and decimals, with students showing great perseverance as they tackle challenges through hands‑on investigations and problem‑solving tasks.

Our Religion unit focuses on vocations and recognising the unique gifts and talents each person brings to the world. Students are reflecting on how these strengths guide their choices and help them contribute meaningfully to their families, communities and faith life. Our Leadership Retreat last Thursday also centred on using these gifts from the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.

Alongside all this learning, we are enjoying forming strong relationships with our new teachers and supporting one another as we begin our final year at St Helena’s. It is a joy to see the cohort grow in confidence, kindness and teamwork.

We are excited for all that the year ahead will bring!
