Promoting a Positive Growth Mindset
Getting things wrong is not only okay it is a crucial part of learning and is one of the first steps to getting it right. As students are now settled in their new school year and learning is underway, it is important we are talking to students about having a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a belief that we can grow and develop our skills. Here are some ways you can encourage a growth mindset.
Model a Growth Mindset
Children learn by example, so showing them how to embrace challenges, try new things, and view mistakes as learning opportunities can help shape their mindset.
Encourage Effort and Persistence
Help your child understand that success comes from hard work and determination. Celebrate their perseverance when they face difficulties, reinforcing the idea that challenges help them grow.
Create Opportunities for Growth
Encouraging children to participate in sports, creative activities, or new learning experiences builds confidence, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
Use Positive Language and Praise
Instead of praising natural ability e.g. “You’re so smart!", focus on their effort and progress e.g. "I’m proud of you for working so hard!". This reinforces the idea that dedication leads to success.
By fostering a growth mindset, we empower children to embrace learning, tackle challenges, and develop skills that will benefit them not just in school, but throughout life.
