2024 Lyrebird Awards

Sunday 8 December

Congratulations to York Newell (Year 9), who was invited to be one of the presenters at the Lyrebird Awards. During the ceremony, York received the Judges' Award, a testament to his outstanding comedic performance in ‘Curtain Call & Chronicles’.

Lilydale High School was also honored to have received 6 Junior Nominations and the Judges' Award in a Youth Play for ‘Curtain Call & Chronicles’ this year;

  • Outstanding Student Design Achievement - Choreography, Lighting, Costume Teams
  • Best Comedic Performer - York Newell
  • Best Dramatic Performance - Max Caulfield
  • Outstanding Acting Partnership - Acrobats | Aruna Bown & Jade McCullough
  • Highly Commended Performer - Emily Geerling
  • Best Choreographer - Kenzie Reid

Unfortunately, we didn't win any of the categories we were nominated in; However, I was struck by a couple of things;

  • We were, it would seem, the only school that put students in charge of sound, lighting, costumes, and choreography. All of these awards were won by adults, and the rest of the nominations were all adults. We should be very proud that our students are receiving education and experience in these areas. This enables them to learn, excel, and compete with specially trained adults with years of experience. This opportunity truly sets them apart and prepares them for future challenges in the performing arts industry.

  • York was a legend as a presenter!

  • Those of our students that attended we fantastic ambassadors for the school.

  • That we know how to make good use of any resource that we have. Some of those schools spent a lot of money on their shows. We were right up there with them using our simple sets and costumes. We focused on the actors.
