What we have been up to...

The students really enjoyed reading our focus text last week, Miss Kraken, which was about a very strict new teacher who had lots of rules. Miss Kraken also happened to be an octopus. The students had great fun coming up with different creatures they would love to have as teachers, as well as those they would definitely not like as a teacher. The highlight activity was when they made their own octopus.

This week, our text was Your School Is the Best!, which follows the adventures of a cockroach who arrives at school in one of the students’ school bags. The students chose their favourite part of the story, with the two most popular moments being when the cockroach was in the teacher’s hair and when he left a rainbow ‘surprise’ in the room after eating all of the crayons.

In Writing, we have begun learning about narratives. We have identified the key features of a narrative, such as characters and settings, and explored how narratives are structured. The students created a story map using their own ideas and developed a character profile, selecting adjectives to describe their character.

In Maths, we have been learning how to locate numbers on a number line, identify numbers that are 'more' and 'less' than to solve problems, and how we can apply our knowledge of place value to solve problems.

For Topic, the students have been learning about the importance of having a Growth Mindset. They created their own mindset message to use throughout the year when things feel challenging. This week, the students also identified their favourite place in the school and drew a bird’s-eye view of that space.
