Dear Grade 3/4 Families,
We are excited to share what has been happening in our classrooms and to keep you informed about upcoming learning, events, and important reminders as we quickly move through Term One.
Netbook Device Reminder: Netbooks are now being sent home with students each afternoon. It is an important stage in helping students to become independent and organised learners. Devices should be fully charged and ready for use at school each day.
The Grade 3–4 teaching team encourages students to read at home whenever they can. We love celebrating students’ reading efforts, so we invite families to send Home Reading Journals (the small green books) to school each Friday. We ask that families do their best to read most nights each week and fill in the green reading diary.
Well done to our Week 5 Maths Challenge winners - 1/2 Rodda! Please find the new Maths Challenge below!

Our class reward systems are now up and running! Students have actively used their voice and agency to help design levelled rewards that recognise positive choices and the demonstration of our school values each day. We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and commitment they are showing in their learning.
Students have also explored how different texts use specific language features and structures depending on their purpose and audience, with a focus on writing engaging narratives to entertain. Our fluid grouping in Mathematics has provided valuable targeted teaching, and we’ve already seen growing confidence and understanding from students in Whole Number and Time. It’s also been wonderful to see students building connections across the cohort and with their Grade 3/4 teachers.
Weeks 7 and 8
In Literacy, we will be exploring procedural texts to understand their structure and language features, helping students confidently write clear and effective procedures of their own. Our phomeme focus will be Dd as in duck and Ii as in igloo and our language focus will review compound words, synonyms and antonyms.
In Mathematics, we will work in flexible groups and independently to develop addition and subtraction skills. This will be through targeted hands-on and applied practice and problem-solving activities to encourage and strengthen students' confidence and understanding when working with numbers.
NAPLAN
During Week 7, from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th March, our Grade 3 students will take part in NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN is a national assessment that provides a snapshot of student learning across Literacy and Numeracy, and it is simply one of many tools we (and the Government) use to understand how best to support each child’s progress.
We approach the week calmly and positively, and we encourage families to do the same. The most helpful support you can provide at home is ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep, enjoys a healthy breakfast, and feels reassured that this is not something to worry about. Remind them that all we ask is that they try their best — the results do not define them, and there is no extra preparation required. Our focus remains on supporting every student to feel confident, capable and proud of their efforts.
IMPORTANTLY, Grade 3 student laptops and chargers will need to stay at school from Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th. This is to ensure that we have them on hand, and fully charged, ready for use. Students in Grade 3 complete their Writing assessment on Wednesday and for this age group, it is still handwritten. The other three assessments are done online using student laptops and it is very important that they are kept in good order, at school throughout this week.
