Year 2 News

Reading

In the last fortnight, the Year 2 students have been learning about how to make predictions for a nonfiction text. They have been looking at clues including the title, the front cover and the contents page to make a good guess for what the text will be about.

The students have also been learning about text to self connections. They have been reading fiction texts and thinking about what it reminds them of in their own lives. The students read a book about a scaredy monster learning to swim and how it reminded some students of their first time swimming, or when they have felt nervous about going into the deep end.

“I used the front cover to tell what the book is about.” - Helena 2A

Writing

Year 2 students have been engaged in writing narratives. First, they identified the features of a narrative, and next, they created a character and developed their personal and physical traits. Once the students completed that, they created a setting and chose adjectives to describe their settings.

During the past fortnight, they have been eagerly learning about simple sentences and how to create compound sentences using conjunctions. Students have been practising creating compound sentences on mini whiteboards. So far, they have focused on the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’.

Once every week, Year 2 students engage in handwriting lessons. During these lessons, students practise correct letter formation and letter placement on dotted thirds.

Over the past 2 weeks, in Maths, students have been exploring place value by building 3-digit numbers using MAB materials and then representing their models through drawings. They practised placing numbers on a number line up to 1000 to strengthen their understanding of number order and size. Students also completed a Thinkboard task to demonstrate their understanding of place value in multiple ways, including showing hundreds, tens and ones, writing numbers in different forms, and explaining their thinking.

In S.E.L, this fortnight, Year 2 students have been learning about stress; what it is, what can cause it, and how it can feel in our bodies. They explored positive strategies to manage stress and discussed ways they can support both themselves and others during challenging moments. Students also focused on how their actions can impact others and the feelings those actions may create. A key area of learning has been the importance of keeping our hands and feet to ourselves and understanding why this helps everyone feel safe and respected.
