Year 3 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 3 students have continued learning about summarising texts. They practised identifying the most important parts of a story and used the SWBST strategy (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then) to organise their ideas clearly.Students are now focusing on making inferences, specifically identifying characters’ emotions and traits. Students are using clues from the text, such as actions and dialogue, to better understand how characters feel and what kind of people they are.

WritingThis fortnight, the Year 3 students have been exploring root words, focusing on the prefixes dis- and tract-. Students have been learning how these prefixes can change the meaning of words, for example, dis- can show the opposite or removal of something, and tract- relates to pulling.Students have also explored the structure of narrative and persuasive texts, identifying the key features of each. They have had the opportunity to plan and write their own narratives and persuasive pieces, putting their understanding of structure into practise.
Social and Emotional Learning
This last fortnight, Year 3 students have been exploring emotional triggers and thinking about what makes people feel certain emotions. They discussed why different people might have different emotional responses to the same situation and reflected on how understanding this can help us empathise with others. Students practised recognising their own feelings and considered strategies to manage strong emotions in positive ways.
AUSLAN
Year 3 students have been learning the signs for different breakfast foods and modes of transportation. They practised using these signs to communicate clearly and build their vocabulary in everyday topics. Students also worked on remembering the correct handshapes and movements, helping them to improve their confidence and fluency in using AUSLAN.
Special Event
Clean Up Australia Day
Year 3 students participated in Clean Up Australia Day. They learned about the importance of taking care of the environment and protecting our local community. Students worked together to clean up their school grounds and surrounding areas, sorting rubbish and recycling where possible.
