Performing Arts

FoundationFoundation students have been using costumes and imaginative play to bring characters to life. They have been learning to use their voice, facial expressions and movements to act out different roles while using their imagination to transform into a wide range of characters. Through dramatic play experiences, students are beginning to understand how drama allows them to explore ideas, express feelings and share stories with others in a creative and engaging way.
Year 1
Year 1 students have been exploring emotions through colour inspired dramatic scenes and learning how to play the djembe drums. They are developing their ability to use voice, facial expressions, movement and space to represent different feelings and moods. Working collaboratively in small groups, students created and performed short stories inspired by colours and their associated emotions, building confidence, creativity and teamwork skills while learning how drama techniques help communicate meaning to an audience.
Year 2
Year 2 students have been developing their improvisation skills by exploring key story elements such as character and problem or tension. They are learning to use their voice, facial expressions and body language to create clear and believable characters while working closely with a partner to build ideas together. A strong focus has been placed on offering and accepting ideas during improvisation, encouraging positive collaboration and creativity. Students have been creating short improvised moments that include a simple problem or tension, helping them understand how stories are structured and how drama can bring those stories to life.
Year 3
Year 3 students have been combining Drama and Music to perform engaging fairytales for an audience. They have focused on synchronising mime techniques, narration and sound effects accurately within their group performances, while performing with expression, timing and confidence. Through rehearsals and reflection, students are developing a deeper understanding of how narration, mime and music work together to communicate ideas and enhance storytelling.
Year 4
Inspired by The Twits by Roald Dahl, Year 4 students have been developing their script reading and characterisation skills. They are learning how to use voice, facial expression and gesture to portray believable characters while working cooperatively in groups to rehearse and perform short scripted scenes. This unit strengthens expressive reading, dramatic interpretation and ensemble performance skills.
Year 5
Year 5 students have been preparing an energetic Dr. Seuss-inspired rap performance that combines music and movement. They are learning to perform the rap expressively while maintaining rhythm and energy, synchronising their performance with a digital beat and lyrics. This unit supports students in developing timing, stage presence and confidence as they rehearse and refine their performance for an audience.
Year 6
Year 6 students have been exploring how music shapes the way audiences experience film. By analysing and discussing different movie scenes, students are developing their understanding of how composers use musical elements such as tempo, dynamics, pitch and instrumentation to create mood, emotion and meaning. They are learning to explain how music changes the way a film scene feels and to share thoughtful ideas about how music helps tell a story on screen, strengthening both their listening skills and their ability to interpret expressive effects in different contexts.
