Year 1 News

Reading
During the past two weeks, The Year 1 students have been exploring the comprehension strategy of Visualising. This has involved them using their imagination to create an image in their heads to support them while reading a text. This strategy fosters creativity and imagination and allows students to connect with a text in their own way.
Additionally students have been learning about making predictions before, during and after reading. They have been practising using the front cover and text clues to make predictions on what a text may be about or what may happen next in a text.

‘Predictions are when we say what we think will happen’- Isaac 1B
Writing
In Writing students have been exploring Narrative texts. They had the opportunity to plan their own narrative using a picture prompt. This involved them identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution. Students practised writing simple sentences to create their narrative. This fostered their imagination and allowed students to be creative when writing. Once a week students have the chance to practise their handwriting This is a great opportunity for students to practise letter formation on dotted thirds. They then apply these skills during all other reading opportunities across the week.

Maths
In Maths students have continued to further develop their understanding of Place Value. This has involved them using hands-on materials to compare numbers and identify the largest and smallest number. Students have also had the opportunity to utilise number charts to identify which number is one less, one more, ten less and ten more than a given number. It has been fabulous to see students engaged in their learning and expanding their knowledge of place value.

Inquiry
In Inquiry the Year 1 students have continued to explore the concept of families. They have been learning about how family structures have changed over time and how family roles have also changed over time. Students had the opportunity to explore the meaning of a Kinship Group which is made up of all the people they care about. It was lovely to see students draw and label the people who they care about in both their family and school life.

Social and Emotional Learning
In Year 1, students have been continuing to build their Social and Emotional Learning skills with a strong focus on developing emotional literacy. Throughout the term, they have been learning to recognise, name and understand a wide range of emotions in themselves and others. They have been exploring how feelings can change throughout the day and how their bodies can give them clues about what they are experiencing.
A key part of this learning has been identifying emotional triggers. Students have been discussing the different situations that can cause big feelings, such as not winning a game, finding work challenging, friendship misunderstandings or changes to routine. By recognising their own triggers, they are beginning to understand that while they cannot always control what happens around them, they can learn strategies to manage their reactions in safe and respectful ways.
