Year 2 Update

Week 8 and 9 of Learning in Year 2, Term 3

Weeks 8 and 9 have been full of exciting learning opportunities and memorable experiences for our students.

A highlight of the fortnight was our fantastic excursion to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre. Students participated in a Push Car Building Workshop, where they used their creativity, problem-solving and teamwork skills to design and build their own LEGO vehicles. They also enjoyed the rides, explored the interactive exhibits, experienced the 4D cinema and spent time in the free-building areas. It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning and fun.

In Phonics, students consolidated and extended their knowledge of a range of graphemes and spelling patterns. They learnt to read and spell words where y represents the /i/ sound, as in gym, and explored less common spellings for the /i/ sound. Students also investigated words where a, au and ou represent the /o/ sound, such as was. Throughout these weeks, students reviewed and applied different spellings for the sounds /i/ and /o/, as well as previously taught graphemes for /j/, /u/, /ee/, /ear/ and /air/. They revised the suffixes -er, -est, -y and -ly, revisited the y to i spelling rule when adding vowel suffixes, practised silent letter patterns and applied their knowledge by writing sentences using recently taught graphemes and morphemes.

In Text Study, students continued developing their reading comprehension and writing skills. They identified facts included within fictional stories and read non-fiction texts to locate and record important information. Students used their research notes to write an information report about the Tasmanian Devil, focusing on organising facts clearly for the reader. They also wrote a recount of our LEGOLAND excursion, reflecting on the exciting experiences of the day. In their reading lessons, students explored story structure by identifying problems and solutions, analysing character motivations and discussing how characters demonstrate belonging and friendship.

In Mathematics, students focused on the concepts of measurement and comparison. They measured and compared the length of objects using informal units and investigated which objects were longer or shorter than a metre. Students also measured and compared height using informal units and explored the mass of different objects by estimating, comparing and measuring. Learning about capacity involved estimating, measuring and comparing how much different containers could hold, helping students develop practical measurement skills.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students learnt about the importance of personal space, boundaries and respect. Through discussions and role-play activities, they explored how to ask for permission, listen to the response and respect other people's choices. Students learnt that everyone has the right to personal space and that showing respect means recognising and honouring the boundaries of others.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and positive attitudes our students have demonstrated. Their hard work and engagement continue to make our classrooms a wonderful place to learn and grow.
