Our Learning - Weeks 9 and 10

Maths

Our next the next two week, we will begin our new Mathematics topic focusing on transformations, grid references and coordinates. Students will explore how shapes can be translated, reflected and rotated, while learning to accurately locate and describe positions on a grid. Through practical and engaging activities, students will develop their spatial reasoning, problem-solving skills and mathematical vocabulary.

English

In English, we will be finishing of our novel study of "1854: Do you Dare?". Students will continue drafting and publishing their persuasive writing pieces using evidence to support their arguments and opinions on whether they believe the miners were justified in rebelling. 

In our literacy skill lessons, will explore how ellipses can create suspense, show hesitation or indicate missing words. They will also revise past, present and future tense to ensure their writing is clear and consistent.

Inquiry 

In Inquiry, to conclude our study of the Victorian Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade, students are immersing themselves in life on the Australian goldfields. Through historical role-play, they are taking on roles such as miners, shopkeepers, troopers and government officials while exploring gold licences, trade, inequality and the events leading to the Eureka Stockade.

SEL 

This fortnight, students will continue exploring Positive Gender Relations as part of the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships program. Students are learning how to be upstanders by safely supporting others and seeking help when they witness disrespectful or harmful behaviour. They are also practising how to recognise unsafe situations, identify trusted adults and use respectful strategies to seek help for themselves or their peers.

Year 5 Reminders 

Homework Reminder:

• Students are expected to complete their spelling and reading each day at home and bring in their diaries daily
• The next 2 week homework task is due Friday Week 9. This task requires students to talk to a family member to learn more about them by asking questions and recording their answer which they will then return to school. They may type and send their answers to their teacher, or they can bring it in handwritten or printed.
• The final homework task for the term is due Friday Week 10. This task requires students to become a photo detective and find ONE example of ONE of the following in the real world: 

-Symmetry  

-Persuasive advertising  

-Angles  

-Fractions in real life  

-A habitat  

-The weather  

-A celebration  

Family Teacher Conversations

• Family–Teacher Conversations will take place in Week 9 on Monday 7th September and Tuesday 8th September. We look forward to meeting with families to celebrate students’ progress and discuss their learning and future goals.

Hats are back and should be worn at all times while outside in the yard.
