Wellbeing Report

Greetings

My favourite quote about teaching is by Henry Adams. He wrote:

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”

(the education of Henry Adams, 1907).

It speaks of the privilege of participating in the formation of young people. It also raises the notion that every person is formed uniquely, with a multitude of gifts that develop over time. The experiences and lessons encountered while a student can form the basis of realizing these gifts over a lifetime.

This week the focus is on the role of significant adults in fostering wellbeing in our students that helps to plant the seeds of self- belief, and the development of character that helps develop resilience and persistence. Nazareth is committed to ensuring the growth of its students, and the importance of significant adults in this endeavour is borne out by research. Nazareth works with platforms that give us insights into the wellbeing of our students across several parameters. Here are some insights that reflect the work of our staff from one of these platforms.

Every interaction between staff and students at the school has the capacity to make students feel that they belong. When staff take the time to show they care, students feel appreciated and supported, and this feeds into their sense of belonging within the school community. Relationships between trusted adults and students are important in fostering a sense of belonging because they facilitate students feeling included, welcomed and safe at school.

Research shows that when students have at least one trusted adult in their school experience, they are more likely to: Have a stronger sense of personal wellbeing; Feel stronger ties to their school environment; Are more likely to experience increased optimism and motivation and; Greater engagement in their learning.

One of the great joys of being a teacher is seeing the growing confidence and self-belief of students. I have truly valued the many inspiring ideas by our aspiring school leaders. I provide two that centre on the idea of what it means to be a Nazarene;

To me, being a true Nazarene is about being a person who can create a positive space and positive differences. I believe it is about showing kindness, respect and compassion, being willing to help others while making the most of any opportunities offered. 

To me, a true Nazarene means being part of our community and acting towards our faith through ways in which we interact with others, specifically with compassion, respect, and kindness. Providing support to those in need, whether it is listening with an open heart, or even small gestures such as a morning greeting, I believe small actions can also leave great impacts. 

I offer the following prayer, written by one of our staff, Francesca Conte. It speaks of the noble endeavours of significant adults to foster the wellbeing of those in our care. I note form student responses above that it seems some seeds are already beginning to shoot.

Lord of the Harvest,  Bless our hands as we steer this college. Water the seeds we have planted today with Your grace. Give us the stamina to nurture what is young, And the joy to celebrate every green shoot of progress.
