Welcome back to Term 3!

During the first week back at school, we acknowledged and celebrated NAIDOC Week, as it was held during the school holidays. Students learnt about the rich cultures, histories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples while exploring the vibrant artwork of Jimmy Pike, a Walmajarri artist from the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. His artwork is recognised for its bold lines, flowing shapes, repeated patterns and symbols, bright contrasting colours, and storytelling through design.

Students created their own Echo Art inspired by Jimmy Pike's unique style. Foundation to Year 4 students designed repeated lines and patterns around a central image to create movement, while Year 56 students extended this technique by creating patterned landscape scenes using echo lines and symbols.

Throughout Term 3, students will be learning about the art elements of texture and form while creating a variety of creative and hands-on artworks.

Foundation

Foundation students created a textured owl artwork by breaking small natural sticks into pieces and carefully gluing them onto an owl template. They then added eyes and a beak to complete their beautiful textured creations.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students designed imaginative textured monsters using a variety of materials, including fabric, corrugated cardboard, foam, pom poms, jewels and other collage materials. They explored how different materials create interesting textures within their artwork.

It was wonderful to have Georgia back in the Art Room this week, along with a special visit from Miss Anna and her baby, Sascha. The students loved sharing their artwork and meeting our special visitors.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students were inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian. They explored primary colours, horizontal and vertical lines, rectangles and squares before experimenting with printmaking techniques to create their own Mondrian-inspired artworks.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students explored symmetry through paper folding by learning three or more basic origami techniques. They carefully arranged their folded creations onto a square black background to produce balanced and symmetrical artworks.

Crazy Camel Fundraising – Celebrate Your Child’s Creativity!

This year, Le Page Primary School is excited to be participating in the Crazy Camel Fundraising Program.

Students will have the opportunity to plan, design, and create their own unique artwork in Visual Arts. Once completed, families will be able to order a range of special keepsakes featuring their child's artwork. These personalised products make wonderful gifts and treasured memories that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Some students have already begun creating their artworks. However, due to the upcoming swimming program over the next two weeks, the majority of students will begin working on their fundraising artworks next term.

Further information about ordering and product options will be sent home once the artworks have been completed.

We are looking forward to celebrating our students' creativity and giving families the opportunity to turn their child's artwork into a special keepsake to treasure forever.

PE 

As we returned back to term 3, the weather was cold and at times a little wet. As a result for the younger years we stayed inside the hall and completed a tabloid sports session. This is a great lesson with all students active for the full session and having a lot of fun. The activities included catching, passing, throwing, kicking, jumping, target activities and more. The students do 9-10 rotations using all of these skills and working with a partner. Not only are they completing these gross motor skills and hand eye skills, they are also developing their social skills with a partner, focusing on teamwork, support, encouragement and communication. All students worked extremely well together, and also completed the activities to the best of their ability, trying really hard.

The year 5 and 6 students have an interschool basketball competition coming up later this term, so for the first two weeks they participated in a basketball lesson. Students developed their understanding of the court by identifying the different parts of the court including sideline, baseline, 3 point line, key and free throw line. They also developed their basketball skills with a focus on dribbling, protecting the ball, defence and shooting. In such a short time, it is easy to see that all students have improved their skills, which is pleasing.

Interschool Sports

As term 2 finished, regular Friday morning interschool sports competition concludes. However, because we did so well in term 1 and 2, we have some of our teams competing in their sports at the next level. Next Tuesday 28th July, our mixed netball team compete at the Kingston District event, which is to be held in Frankston. We wish them luck for a fun and successful day.

Next Friday 31st July, our teeball girls compete at the Kingston District teeball event at Kingston Heath Reserve, which is at the end of Farm Rd. We wish them all the best for a great day. The softball girls next round of competition is in term 4.

Music Newsletter - Week 2

Preps:

This Term preps have begun a 5 week unit of learning about musical instruments. In week 1, students explored the family of instruments called woodwind. They learned about different instruments that are part of the woodwind family and listened to examples of each instrument being played. Through examples such as the saxophone, clarinet and flute students observed the sounds and tones each instrument makes and created their own simple pan-pipe out of paper and glue to create their own woodwind sounds. In Week 2, students learned about different types of percussion instruments. They listened to and watched examples of different drums, pianos and glockenspiel being played and learned to play simple rhythmic patterns on the bucket drums and djembe.  

Year 1 & 2

Students in year 1 and 2 and begun a 6 week unit of learning exploring drama and the performing arts. In week 1, they learned to use the drama skill of improvisation to respond to different scenarios in a game called “At the Bus Stop”. Students created their own character and fictional destination they were travelling to and had an improvised conversation with one of their peers. Everyone did an amazing job moving a little out of their comfort zone to act in front of the class and should be proud of the way they enacted our mission statement of being brave, engaged and creative. In week 2 students continued their learning about improvisation through a game called “Umms and Ahhs.” Students were given a random topic to talk about and were then timed to see how long they could speak for before saying um, ah or pausing for more than 2-3 seconds. Students also did a read through of a simple script about a group of students visiting the zoo. They were able to follow the script structure and say their lines for their character. In future weeks, students will be creating their own scripts and performing their script in a small group.

Year 3 & 4

It has been wonderful to see the enthusiastic way that the year 3 and 4 students have embraced their new unit of learning about Film Making. In week 1 they explored the fundamentals of filming by looking at different shot types including: extreme long shot, long shot, mid shot, close up, extreme closeup and establishing shot. Students used the iPads to take photos showing these different types of shots making sure to adhere to the different features of each shot. In week 2, students continued their learning about film making by exploring how to film a simple scene. Students filmed each other walking towards a chair and sitting down and then edited this sequence together using a long shot, mid shot and close up.

Year 5 & 6

Students in year 5 and 6 have spent the first 2 weeks of Term 3 filming and finalising their commercials which they began planning in the final weeks of Term 2. Everyone has done an amazing job using their knowledge of film making that they have explored last term and created something absolutely fantastic. The year 5 & 6 students will be holding a movie afternoon in the coming weeks where they will share their commercials with all 5 & 6 students and the wider Le Page community.
