Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers

Term 3 has started off with positivity and excitement, and it has been fantastic to see our students return with enthusiasm for a busy term ahead. There are plenty of exciting opportunities ahead this term. In Week 3, our mixed netball and girls' T-ball teams will be progressing to the next stage of competition. We wish all of our students the very best and know they will represent our school with pride. Looking ahead, our Bridgebuilders program begins next week, with a group of 5/6  students visiting the local nursing home each Monday. This initiative provides students with the opportunity to build meaningful connections within our community while developing empathy, confidence and communication skills.

Learning Focuses

Literacy

This week, students have begun developing their poetry skills, with a particular focus on an Australian narrative poem, Bindi. Through close reading and discussion, students have analysed how poets use language, structure, rhythm, and imagery to tell a story and create meaning. They have started to identify poetic devices, explore characters and themes, and discuss emotion and messages conveyed through the text. The 5/6 students have also had a chance to write two poems of their own, and it has been lovely to see their creativity shine.

Mathematics

In Year 5, students have been developing their understanding of fractions by learning to add and subtract fractions with the same and related denominators. Students are building confidence in recognising and finding equivalent fractions by using doubling and halving strategies, enabling them to add and subtract fractions more efficiently. 

In Year 6, students have begun adding and subtracting fractions with both related and unrelated denominators. They are working with a variety of fraction types, including proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers, as well as finding common denominators and selecting appropriate calculation strategies. 

Inquiry

In Inquiry, 5/6 students have begun their Economics unit as they prepare for our upcoming Market Day on Monday 24 August (Week 7). As part of this exciting project, groups will design, create and sell their own products, with all proceeds going towards their graduation celebrations.

Throughout the unit, students have been developing their understanding of key economic concepts, including the difference between wants and needs, the relationship between money and currency, and the principles of supply and demand. They will apply this knowledge to make informed decisions about pricing, production and marketing, preparing them for the highly anticipated Market Day!
