STEAM UPDATE Term 1 2026

It has been a busy start to the year in the STEAM room, which began with all 3 to 6  grades exploring team challenges to refine their teamwork and social skills. We designed and built a paper table that would hold a glue stick on top. We were only permitted to use ONE sheet of A4 paper and some tape to create it, we had some successful designs and some some not so successful ones, but we all know what we would improve next time!

Grade 3's are upto the planning stage of designing a rocket and a catcher to ensure a safe return to earth. There are many constraints that they must follow. Their blueprints are in the final stages before they begin creating, testing and making improvements.

Grade 4 students are learning about electrical energy. We are using our new Snap Circuits to explore closed and oped circuits. We have also explored a loop circuit powering two devices and compared it to the power available in a parallel circuit. We had lots of excitement buzzing through the room especailly when the fans took off!

Grade 5 and 6 students are working on their blueprints. Grade 5 are designing an earthquake proof building model that will hopefully remain standing in one piece after being on the earthquake testing machine for one minute. Fingers crossed they go well. I can't wait to see their designs. Grade 6 are designing a solar oven out of recycled materials. We have tested the temperature of many different surfaces outside, some were in the shade and others full sun. They are looking forward to 'cooking' food in them once done.

Music Update

Prep students are exploring movement and their voices through singing songs and hand actions. We are going to continue this exploration to continue to build self confidence in Music!

Year One students have been matching rhythms and Possum Magic characters together. Lots of teamwork has been on display in the rooms and it has been fabulous! Next fortnight we will begin to explore our African drums!

Year Two students have been continuing to play glockenspiels. This week has been very relaxing listening to Twinkle Twinkle being played! I’m so proud of their persistence learning a new skill and reading music!!
