The Next Fortnight of Learning
Mathematics
The grade six team have been so impressed with how students tackled their order of operations learning. They were methodical and made great progress.
Over the next fortnight we will begin delving into the world of fractions. We will be identifying, comparing and ordering fractions as well as adding and subtracting fractions.
Literacy
With our Immigration unit drawing to a close, the students have greater background knowledge on how Australia became the multicultural nation that we are today. There are many ‘pull’ factors that make Australia a desirable destination for people wishing to migrate here. They may have wanted better educational opportunities, a better way of life, reunification with family or even better weather! There are also ‘push’ factors that have an effect on refugees and asylum seekers where they may have to flee their native country due to war or persecution. All of these different cultures have shaped Australia. Not to mention the food!
This fortnight, Grade 6 is starting a new unit called Rights and Reforms. We’re kicking off with the Magna Carta and exploring how it helped shape democracy.
Students will look at how Australia’s government was formed, the key parts of our system, how women won the right to vote, how First Nations Peoples’ rights changed over time, and how immigration has shaped Australia’s identity. We’ll also explore how people can participate in democracy.
It’s a great unit for building reading, discussion and critical thinking skills while learning about how rights and reforms have shaped the world we live in today.
Library
Each week, our Grade 6 students visit the library to browse, borrow and explore new books. Even in the senior years, reading remains incredibly important. It builds vocabulary, strengthens comprehension, sparks imagination and supports learning across all s
ubjects. Regular library visits encourage students to develop independence in choosing texts, discover new genres and authors, and continue building a lifelong love of reading.
Well Being
On Tuesday 10th March, Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing performance ‘The Protectors’ for grade 6. The performance follows the story of Leo and Serena, who are struggling to get along with their peers. When Leo and Serena enter ‘Protector School’ they discover that empathy, assertiveness and respect are their real superpowers. They learn how to build resilience and positive connections at school, at home and online.
‘The Protectors’ is a live theatre experience, developed by educators and a clinical psychologist. The performance is aligned with key outcomes from the curriculum, as well as current research and recommendations from expert organisations such as the eSafety Commissioner. The show is designed to spark conversations about bullying, cyber safety and wellbeing among our students.
Brainstorm Productions is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected theatre in education companies, performing to over 260,000 students every year. Brainstorm Productions are endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider and listed as an evidence-based bullying prevention program on the Victorian Schools Mental Health Menu. Waratah Beach Camp!
The first three days of Term 2 see us off to Waratah Beach Camp for our 3 day beach based adventure program. The students get to rotate through 8 different activities, with the highlights being the Giant Swing and Rock Climbing tower that push the students to stretch their comfort zone. I’ve been on a lot of camps and this one is undoubtedly my favourite. The beach is absolutely stunning and we get to go over there in the evening, walk to the rock pools on the second day and play beach games on the third. It’s brilliant!
Please let your classroom teacher know if your child will not be attending.
Enjoy the Long Weekend!
Ms. Grant, Mr. Taberner and Mrs. Hammill
