Visit from the Mayor! - By Ema & Esha

On Tuesday, the 5/6s got a visit from Councillor Sue Baker, the current Mayor of Frankston. She started off by explaining to the students some responsibilities of the three levels of government: local, state, and federal. Mayor Baker shared some videos and photos of local statues, murals, and sites. As well as pictures of Frankston, she also showed photos of her with other Councillors and MPs.  She brought the Chains of Office that are made out of real gold and both the 5/6 classes got to touch and feel the chains! The chains got detached because they were too heavy, the total amount of money that they are worth is around $150,000!

After that, the Mayor did a Q&A and the students asked creative questions, like:

  • What is the best thing about being Mayor?
  • How old do you have to be to be the Mayor?
  • How do you become the Mayor?

Overall, we all had an excellent time and learned a lot!

Family Picnic

Last night, we held our annual SFX Family Picnic. It was a really lovely evening, full of fun, family, and food! Here are a few highlights from some of the fabulous 5/6L humans who were able to come along:

  • Matilda - I went to play on the junior end equipment and it was quiet there.
  • Otis - I liked seeing everyone out of school.
  • Ema - My favourite was the fact that there were so many cool things to do and they were all so unique.
  • Esha - I liked the sausages!
  • Harley - I really liked the bouncing castle.
  • Joanah - My favourite thing was the new bouncing castle because they changed it and it was more fun than last year. I also liked the giant teddy bear with the lollypops.
  • Helna - I liked hanging out with my friends and the jumping castle.
  • Abel - I liked that we could get tattoos for free.
  • Xaivier - Every part of the picnic was my favourite!
  • Dwayne - My favourite part was hanging out with my friends.

Parliament Role Play Incursion

In another exciting part of our Inquiry unit, we had a really fun incursion where we role played passing a Bill in the House of Representatives. We revised the three levels of Government, did some preferential voting, and then debated a Bill to ban P.E in schools. Students played different roles, such as Speaker of the House, Sergeant at Arms, the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, House Clerk, and Members of Parliament. In a surprise twist, the Bill failed to pass when one of the Government ministers crossed the floor! It was a really fantastic way to see what we've been learning in action.
