CAREERS UPDATE

The Benefits of a School Based Apprenticeship

This is Mar Ner Ku, he is a year 11 student who is combining his VCE studies with a School Based Traineeship in Health Services Assistance.

Mar Ner Ku works every Friday at Bentwood Age Care Facility in Geelong and has quickly become a favourite with the residents. He is shown here preparing the nibbles and drinks for happy hour one Friday afternoon.

Mar Ner really enjoys the interactions with the citizens and participates in some of their activities, with his favourite being the Chair Yoga sessions and the Quiz. What Mar didn’t realise before entering his SBAT was just how much he would grow as a person. He’s now more confident, can listen + understand instructions better, is more accepting and open minded and he has greater patience and kindness in his heart.

The duties differ day to day, depending on what the centre has planned, but he always enjoys helping with the food delivery and taking his elderly friends out for a walk in the grounds for a chat.

He is surprised how he is hardly ever tired after a full day at work, as it doesn’t ever feel like to work to him. His time at Brentwood makes him happy and he’s glad he’s helping and making a difference.

Mar Ner Ku is now seriously considering this as his career, and from what the residents and staff at Brentwood tell us – he will be brilliant.

Congratulations on a great decision to do an SBAT, and keep up the superb work.

During week 3 our VCAL students put their enterprise businesses on display by holding their first market in time for Mother's Day. The students had a range of products for sale such as clothing, plants, food and jewellery which they have been preparing over term 1. The students held markets at both the Goldsworthy and Hendy campuses.

You may have already seen these pictures on our college facebook page

This term was the grand opening of the 2021 VCAL Cafe. The students have been working hard during term 1 to develop their business plan and meet VCAL personal development skills and work related outcomes. The cafe is operating for staff and students at Goldsworthy Campus every Tuesday recess and lunch. VCE Update

Throughout semester one the VCE Arts community have been making the most of the opportunity to restart our Seasons of Excellence tours and visit some of the major exhibits of student work from Victorian public and private schools. In term 1 the VCE Studio Arts students were the first group to enjoy a tour of the TopArts exhibit at the Ian Potter Gallery at Federation Square and the Triennial at the National Gallery Victoria(NGV).

Both of these exhibits showcase work from exceptional artists from Victorian school students and artists from around the World.

The Top Arts exhibit was especially significant as the artworks in this show were created during the Victorian lock downs of 2020 and reflect some of the personal and universal feelings and experiences of VCE students. The Triennial exhibit is a collection of modern artworks from contemporary artists from Australia and around the World. Both exhibitions were inspirational to the Studio Art students and our hope is that their inspiration will result in a Top Arts winner from NBC Goldsworthy in 2021.

The VCE Viscom and Textiles students were the second group to visit Melbourne this year. The students made their way to the NGV to see an exhibit of textiles, design and artworks from Australia and around the World and then made their way to Museum Victoria for the Top Designs exhibition for 2020. This year the Top Designs exhibit displayed some exceptional Victorian student work which reflected the commitment and endurance of Victorian school students’ in the face of the restrictions and lock downs of 2020. The NBC students were especially inspired by the fantastic textiles displays and the wonderful architectural models and final presentations in the Viscomm Design section of the show.

The amount of work involved in the student folios on display was amazing and gave the NBC students a benchmark of achievement for 2021. We hope that the Arts and Technology students from Goldsworthy have been inspired by these events and strive to reach the highest standards of achievement in 2021.

Ms Brennan, Ms Plumb, Mr A and Mr Squire were impressed by the student maturity of our students during both excursions and we wish all students in the VCE Arts and Technology subjects all the very best for their endeavours in 2021. Let’s work together to make sure that our college is the next Geelong school to be represented in the Seasons of Excellence in 2022.

Foo Fighters by Ethan Glowacki

The Foo Fighters are a rock band that was formed in 1994 in Washington, Seattle. The founder of the band is former drummer Dave Grohl, from the well-known band Nirvana. After the death of Kurt Cobain, Dave didn’t want his music career to come to a sudden end. So what he decided to do was start a one man band. The debut album for the Foo Fighters is one of their best to date, and Dave recorded it all in five days! The album peaked at #2 on the New Zealand billboard charts, also peaked at #23 in America out of 200, which is impressive. Talking about albums; they just released a new album at the start of February titled “medicine at midnight”.

My Family

Christina
Christina

I was born and grew up into my loving and caring family for all my years and I think I know them really well.  My family came from Thailand but in a state called Mae Surin which I don't really remember since I was very young, but living in Thailand was very hard for my family and not really a safe place because there was war and it was nothing like Australia. Since coming to Australia we are very thankful and lucky to be able to live in a safe and friendly place but I do hope that we’ll go back to Thailand one day because we still have families and relatives there.

In my family there is my Mum, Dad, two brothers, sister and me the youngest. We used to live in an area in Melbourne called Sunshine but then moved to Geelong where my dad’s sister lived which is my auntie. I have a lot of family but they are not here. Some are in America, Thailand and  Australia but some I don't even know of. As a family we’ve had lots of ups and downs but in the end we are still family and I am happy and grateful for it. I love my family for everything they are, we support each other, encourage one another, look out for each other and love one another. I hope that one day all my family will be together again in one place because I really miss them and I love them all. This is my family at the end.

LIFE

Learning beyond the college classroom

This term has seen students return to the important aspect of learning beyond the classroom. Lat year opportunities for offsite visits to learning environments were scare but COVID success in Victoria has seen a return to excursion experiences.

This short clip shows Year 10 students out and about at BioLab in Belmont, Lawn Bowls and X Golf.

Humanities Story Boards
