To say Term 2 is a busy term for the Year 3-6 Community at Northern Bay is an understatement! With so much going on from excursions, incursions, camps, NAPLAN and our normal curriculum program, students really are enjoying an exciting term.
Students in years 3/4 have literally launched into this term with an incursion called Project Rockit which was based around building empathy and developing stronger friendships with their peers. Students have had the opportunity to learn and develop their understanding around what it means to be resilient and this perfectly complimented the HASS learning which is based around personal identity, community, cultural and social groups.
Our topic in 3/4 is ‘The Changemakers’ and centres around who in our local community has used resilience to change the world and make it a better place.
During Education Week our Year 4 students are very lucky to have the opportunity to head away for an overnight camp at our Staughton Vale Outdoor Education Centre S.V.E.O.C. Staughton Vale is located just past Anakie. The students will participate in team building activities, go for a bush walk at Anakie Gorge and build some campfires as part of their school camp fun.
These pictures are small but give a good idea of the range of activities.
This week and again in early June, many of our Year 5 students head off to camp- heading down to Anglesea to Camp Wilkin. They will enjoy the terrific outdoor activities that the Camp provides with adventures that they will remember, as we all do, for the rest of their lives. The Camp is a 2 night, 3 day stay and will be incredible for them. Being June, they will love snuggling in their sleeping bags.
Thank you to all students in Year 3 and 5 for the way they approached the NAPLAN tests on the 11, 12 and 13 of May. Whilst it is important that our students sit their NAPLAN tests, we try to minimise anxiety that comes from formal testing set ups by assuring students that this is just a small snapshot of some of the things they can do.
Students in Year 5 and 6 have also begun their busy term with a Cultural Walk to the Melbourne CBD which provides a practical and enjoyable support for our HASS topic of Geography. The walk included:
In HASS this term, our Year 5 students are learning the difference between a want and a need and are participating in a ‘Shark Tank’ style unit of inquiry that will see them develop, create or innovate an idea to produce a product, much like the TV program Shark Tank.
Is a trial program of a new Chromebook app that teaches and encourages students to learn about finances, money and what that means for them. If it is a great learning tool this APP will be a great asset to our curriculum.
A major focus of the term for Year 6 sees the students participating in the Kids Thrive- Kids as Catalyst for Change which is a wonderful opportunity for them to make and have impact on something they are passionate about in our local community. The work builds across the term and will finish with an Expo which will be held at their base campus where students will have the opportunity to showcase their work and explain how they have impacted their local community. There will be further information and invitations to the important events which will take place at the end of this term and beginning of next term with regards to these important community action events.
