Year 7 Students in the Library

Over the last two weeks, our Year 7 students completed their McCarthy library orientation and Book Hunt during Science lessons.  Students worked well together and had great fun hunting throughout the library looking for books and other resources. We can see how students have already grown in confidence when browsing or using the catalogue to look for a great read in the fiction and non-fiction collection.

The Premier's Reading Challenge 2023 has commenced

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) started on 28 February 2023.  The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

At McCarthy, PRC is for students from 7-10. It finishes on Friday 18 August 2023. Details on how to participate this year will be given to students soon.

The PRC website is refreshed, with a new look and also has an updated book list for students to access.

Do you need access to books to read at home?

Our library offers access to over 2,000 PRC Booklist titles on the shelves ready to borrow.  These titles are accessible via a tailored reading list and are easily searchable in our Oliver Library Catalogue.   We are happy to show students how to do this if they are unsure.

Additionally, our students have SORAapp, the McCarthy E-Book platform on their Chromebooks and downloadable onto their phones. The SORApp enables students to read ebooks on their Chromebook and other devices.  It has over 2,000 PRC Booklist titles, These can be accessed 24x7.  If you are yet to access SORA come in and see us and we will get you started.

Library Lovers Day

Library Lovers day is 14 February.  At McCarthy we celebrated Library Lovers week.  Students joined in by filling a little heart with their thoughts on what they love about our Library.  The hearts became the leaves on our Library Lovers Tree.

Our display fluttered in the breeze with grateful thoughts, including this small sample from our students:

“I love the library because it opened my eyes to a new world…”
“I love printing in colour.”
“I love talking to the Library ladies.”
“Heaps of books, educating, air-conditioned!”
“I love my library, it is such a welcoming space.”
“I love the book variety and the safe space the library creates.”
“I love all the horror books.”
“The helpfulness and kindness of staff.”
