Teens, Charlie and Nick, are at the same school, but they've never met... until one day when they're made to sit together. They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn't think he has a chance.

But love works in surprising ways, and Nick is more interested in Charlie than either of them realised. HEARTSTOPPER is about love, friendship, loyalty, and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie's lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us.

Written and illustrated by British author Alice Oseman, these books are also the subject of the 2022 television series on Netflix.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Well done to our students who have been busy reading and logging books online over the break for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. There are less than 50 days left of the challenge, so keep up the great work! A reminder, if you are looking for book recommendations speak to your Communicate and Relate teacher, Niamh in the library or Ms Aimee Shattock.

It is wonderful to see our students embrace reading and the Challenge is on until 2nd September. All students who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers and go into a draw to win prizes. Miles Franklin Literary Award

The prestigious Miles Franklin Literary Award winner for 2022 will be announced on 20th July.

The five shortlisted novels are:

The Other Half of You (Michael Mohammed Ahmad, Hachette)
Scary Monsters (Michelle de Kretser, A&U)
Bodies of Light (Jennifer Down, Text)
One Hundred Days (Alice Pung, Black Inc.)
Grimmish (Michael Winkler, Puncher & Wattmann).

This year’s shortlist was chosen from a longlist of 12, which included John Hughes’s The Dogs, removed from contention for the award after the Guardian discovered instances of plagiarism in the novel.

CBCA 2022 Book Week

The CBCA 2022 Book Week takes place from 20-26 August and the theme is ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’
