Area of Study 3 (Student-designed investigations)
At the end of Term 2 Biology Unit 3/4 students completed their AOS 3: Student-designed Research Investigation which is part of their assessment for Unit 4. It required students to design an investigation that linked to one of the biochemical pathways that was studied in AOS 2 (photosynthesis or cellular respiration). Students then spent 2 weeks (10 hours in total) designing, researching, and implementing their investigations. Students then spent their final lesson writing up their scientific poster to communicate their findings. I was very impressed with the students who worked diligently and effectively to ensure they had valid and reliable investigations. Well done!

Spongebob Mystery Mixtures
Last week our Year 8 students tried their hand at separating mixtures. Using a process of their own design, groups successfully extracted salt from a mixture of wood, metal, sand and polystyrene. In this unit, students will be learning about industrial waste separation to provide clean drinking water for all, and investigating the real-world problems and innovative solutions to wastewater management on a global scale.
