Intermediate and Senior Girls Cricket

On Wednesday the 6th of March, many weary Bullants made the early trip down to Ballarat at 7:30 in the morning. With 3 teams qualifying for the Greater Western Region cricket finals, it was always going to be a great day for Warrnambool College regardless of the results but the students showed great persistence and resilience to turn the day into a resounding success.

The Senior Girls played the first game of the day putting on a massive score of 9/160 from 18.4 overs thanks to big contributions from Layla Wilson (42) Rachel Vickery (31) and Lori Boyd (19 not out.) In response perennial GWR powerhouse Ballarat High School could only manage 60 runs, when they were all bowled out in the 17th over. There was many wonderful bowlers on the day with wicket takers including Chloe McKenzie, Kate Huebner and Tabitha Castleman with 2 wickets each, and Layla Wilson, Ava Bishop and Lori Boyd each taking 1 wicket as well as Sascha White taking an amazing direct hit run out as a substitute fielder. This puts the girls through to the state quarter finals for the second consecutive year!

Following this the Intermediate Girls had quite a performance to live up and they did just that. Coming up against Ballarat regional winner in Daylesford Secondary College, the girls took early wickets to remove some strong Daylesford bats and kept it tight all throughout the innings to restrict Daylesford to 3/109 off their 20 overs. With Sascha White, Anna Wilson and Jess Perry all taking 1 wicket each, as well as a phenomenal catch by Ramona McGillivray-Priedkalns helping remove one of their best players. In reply the Bullants got off to an amazing start through Sascha White and Anna Wilson who put on a strong partnership of 54 for the first wicket before Sascha was controversially given a run out for 42 which put the girls in a bit of panick. But to their credit they responded to the challenge with some late hitting from Lily Johnson (8) and Stella Bridgewater (21 not out) getting the Bullants over the line passing the target of 110 in just the 15th over.

Overall it was a very successful day for girls cricket at Warrnambool College with both teams progressing through to the State Quarter Finals meaning that they are now considered in the top 8 public school teams across the state for cricket which is a phenomenal achievement considering many girls have never played cricket before, so well done to all who were involved and we’ll get training for the next rounds to come! If you see any of these girls around school make sure you congratulate them.
