BSC Cross Country Competition

Another successful sporting event was completed earlier this term - the annual BSC Cross Country event ran on Tuesday May 25 in nearby Gilpin Park.

This is a compulsory event for all students in Years 7 & 8.  The event was held during Period 2 & 3 only, with students attending Period 1 and Period 4 classes as normal.

Students in Year 9 were invited to nominate for the  competition, however the remainder of the Year 9 cohort who chose not to participate in the event were expected to attend classes as per  the normal, full school day.

The majority of competitors gave the event a red-hot go - making the most of being out of the classroom and stretching their legs! Gilpin Park is nearby to the school and so a great choice for us - although the park is small it provides the right terrain for cross country and enjoys varied vegetation.  Students simply run two laps of the course to cover the distance required for this category of event.  Competition was rigorous but fair - well done to all the participants!

It was really hard on the second lap - you sometimes had to run through other competitors that you had lapped! Navigating the turns was hard and really slowed you down.  We all thought the hills were hard too - because you had to keep up your momentum. If you slowed down,  it was just harder to get up them!

14yo Girls - 6th and 7th place

We found it pretty easy on the first lap,  but in the second lap we had to push ourselves and then sprint to the end.  Also, in the second lap it became a lot harder because we were lapping slower people.

Neither of us did much training for this race, as we both play soccer out of school.  We will have to do some training for the next competition - probably jogging daily.

I didn't have any tactics for the race except to do my best - then I slipped at the start so I had to sprint to get back into it. Once in front of the pack, there were a couple close behind me so I had to step up my pace to keep ahead of them.  I think I ran a slower time than last year as I took a couple of wrong turns.

It was a tough race - I just had to keep pushing through the harder bits and use my stamina. My tactic was to conserve as much energy as I could until the end so that I could sprint home.

We went well and enjoyed running in the big open area.  It was also good to be running with friends - and hearing other friends cheering us on!
