VET taster!
Year 10
Vocational Education and Training
Introduced this year, the VET Taster elective available to Year 10 students has been very popular.
This subject offers students exposure to a variety of Vocational Education & Training (VET) subjects at Northern College of the Arts & Technology. This elective includes modules from the Sport and Recreation, Technology & Building and Construction training packages. Students need to demonstrate competency in both written and practical classes and are required to travel to NCAT every Tuesday afternoon.
This elective is of particular interest to students who are thinking about studying VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Apllied Learning) in 2018 or a VET (Vocational Education Training) subject as a part of their VCE program.

I chose to do this elective because I am considering going into the BSC VCAL program next year, which means I would be taking a VET subject.
I really enjoy VET Taster for a lot of reasons. It is nice to get out of the school and go to the training centre - it is very different from BSC. I think doing this will be a big help for me in deciding whether to pursue VCAL or not. Whether I do VCAL or VCE, I can still incorporate a VET subject so this elective gives me the chance to see what studying a VET subject outside of BSC is really like.
Because we get to look at different types of VET subjects, I have can find out what most interests me and what I enjoy the best. I am also getting to meet new teachers and students which is fun. I think that everyone should consider giving this a go as it shows you what life is like outside of BSC and could be a big help with your pathway decisions,

The highlight would be the carpentry unit. Developing and designing my own skateboard has been really fun.

Being involved in the VET Taster has made me consider studying a VET subject in 2018. NCAT is a great environment to learn new things. The carpentry unit was my favourite. I would definitely recommend this to other students.

Participating in the VET Taster program was an awesome experience. It has helped me develop both trade and leadership skills. Both the automotive and carpentry units were enjoyable. It is hard to choose a favourite.
