Douglas Shield Grand Finalists!!
The Riverina Anglican College progressed to the final of the Douglas Shield Open age cricket competition, which was played this week in Wagga Wagga. The Douglas shield is a state wide competition between Combined Independent Schools of NSW.
The final was originally scheduled to be played in March of this year, however, COVID meant it was postponed until a suitable time could be found. The game was played against St Phillips Christian College of Cessnock.
St Phillips won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that was quite even for both bat and ball. Joe Perryman struck with early wickets (2/19) before Luke Fellows got in on the act getting the next three batsmen to finish with 3 for 11. At this stage, we look to be on top having St Phillips 6 for 47 in the 16th over. However, a fighting 7th wicket partnership for St Phillips of 70 saw them to a respectable total of 130, bowled out by some great late bowling of Jack Glanvill (2/9) and Tom Howard (2/1) in the 38th over.
Our opening batsmen, Jacob Manley started strongly for the College taking seven from the 1st over of the run chase. However, St Phillips had a very strong bowling attack, in particular A Stafa who finished with figures of 6 for 16 and bowled with pace not seen in this competition for a long time. The boys never gave up and continued to fight for partnerships right to the end. Some admirable performances from Bill Glanvill (27) Sam McCready (14) and Luke fellows (13) were not enough to chase the runs down, we were final bowled out for 89 runs in the 31st over.
This game saw the end of College cricket for Sam McCready, Ben Lewington and Jacob Manley as they recently completed their HSC. The College would like to thank these boys along with other year 12 boys who played in this year’s competition. These being Joe Martin, Jarrod MacLeod, Peter Naumann, Jamie Lenko and Abdul Umar. In particular, Captain Sam McCready who represented the opens team since Year 8 and reached state honours during his time here.
The team for the final was Sam McCready (c) Bill Glanvill, Josh Hosie, Jacob Manley, Rhauri MacLeod, Tom Howard, Joe Perryman, Luke Fellows, Sam Stening, Judd McLeod, Jack Glanvill and Ben Lewington.
The team now plays the first round of the new competition against Shellharbour Anglican College in week ten of this term.
